Authorities in Taraba State have confirmed the tragic deaths of three individuals following a violent clash between members of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) and the Global Methodist Church (GMC) in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area.
The violent incident took place on Sunday, according to police spokesperson SP Usman Abdullahi, who provided details of the confrontation.
The altercation is understood to have been the culmination of a prolonged and unresolved leadership dispute between the two factions.
This disagreement, which had been simmering for some time, eventually led to a split within the church, with some members breaking away to form a new faction under the GMC banner.
Tensions between the two groups had been escalating for months, prompting the Taraba State Government to take action by sealing the headquarters of the UMCN in Jalingo in an effort to quell the rising tensions.
In response to the violent confrontation, law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized.
SP Abdullahi confirmed that six individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident, while additional police and military personnel were deployed to the area to prevent further violence and restore peace.
The state and local authorities are continuing their efforts to stabilise the situation and prevent further loss of life.
