Salihu Lukman, the former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the North West, has critiqued past Nigerian leaders, particularly former President Olusegun Obasanjo, for the ongoing problems facing the country. Lukman expressed his views in an open letter titled ” Satanic Leadership and Nigeria’ s Boiling Point, ” responding to Obasanjo’ s comments that even poorly chosen leaders can emerge, but ultimately, only those chosen by God will succeed. He urged Obasanjo to acknowledge his past errors as Nigeria works towards finding solutions to its myriad challenges.
In his letter, Lukman emphasized that Obasanjo should move beyond the ” vain glory” of his previous tenure and recognize that all leaders since Nigeria’ s independence share in the responsibility for the country’ s current leadership failures. He pointed out that Obasanjo, during his time, inadvertently established a culture of candidate imposition within political parties, particularly within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lukman recalled how, prior to the 2007 elections, candidate imposition became a norm under Obasanjo’ s influence in the PDP. He noted that as the ruling party for sixteen years, this practice solidified into a standard political approach, leading to a degradation of democratic principles in Nigeria. He argued that this shift resulted in a political environment that resembled authoritarian rule, undermining true democratic processes.
According to Lukman, the persistent challenges Nigeria faces can be traced back to the decisions made by past leaders, including Obasanjo, to produce handpicked successors. This practice has exacerbated the political instability and has had detrimental effects on the nation’ s social and economic landscape, worsening under subsequent administrations.
Lukman’ s critique serves as a call for reflection among former leaders, urging them to take responsibility for their roles in shaping Nigeria’ s political trajectory.
