The Lamido of Adamawa, Muhammadu Mustapha, has shared the reasons behind his detention by the military government of Muhammadu Buhari following the overthrow of President Shehu Shagari’ s civilian administration in 1983.
Speaking on Saturday during a courtesy visit by Zubair Idris, Programme Manager of Wadata Communication Limited, the traditional ruler recounted the events surrounding his detention. The meeting took place after an event in Yola.
Mr. Mustapha explained that his detention stemmed from his role as a commissioner in the civilian government of the then Gongola State. Following the military takeover, the new regime ordered the detention of all political officeholders at the time to investigate allegations of corruption.
” I was investigated and found to be clean, and I was subsequently released, ” he stated.
The Lamido also expressed his unwavering support for the fight against corruption, commending the Buhari administration for its dedication to tackling the issue. He noted that some people expected him to harbor resentment toward Mr. Buhari due to the 1983 incident. However, he clarified that he bore no ill feelings, emphasizing that his experience did not affect his perspective on the anti- corruption campaign.
During the visit, Mr. Idris informed the Lamido about a town hall meeting organized in Yola to promote the anti- corruption drive. The meeting, supported by the US- based MacArthur Foundation, brought together traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups, educators, media practitioners, and other key stakeholders.
Mr. Idris lauded the Lamido for his role in combating corruption, particularly through the establishment of Pulaku FM. The station, which broadcasts in local languages, has been an active partner in Wadata Communication Limited’ s anti- corruption initiatives.
He revealed that Wadata Communication had trained 36 journalists and producers in investigative journalism, equipping them to expose corruption and advocate for good governance. This effort has already shown tangible results, such as a Pulaku FM program that exposed and curbed extortion by police officers along the Yola- Fufore- Gurin road.
The Lamido praised the MacArthur Foundation for its support, describing it as a testament to America’ s commitment to fostering a better Nigeria.
