BREAKING! ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike; SEE The University That Will Be Affected
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Niger Delta University (NDU), owned by the Bayelsa State Government, has declared an indefinite strike. The union announced this decision on Tuesday, following a meeting at its secretariat in Amassoma.
ASUU stated that the industrial action was necessary due to the Bayelsa State Government’ s alleged failure to fulfill agreements previously made with the union. These agreements reportedly include financial and operational commitments essential to the smooth functioning of the university.
In a statement released during the announcement, ASUU emphasized the government’ s negligence, saying, ” We have waited long enough for the government to fulfill its promises, but there has been no progress. This strike is our last resort to protect the welfare of our members and ensure quality education at NDU. ”
This development is expected to disrupt academic activities at NDU, leaving students and staff uncertain about when normal operations will resume. Students are now advised to monitor updates as further details about the strike unfold in the coming days.
Meanwhile, at Lagos State University (LASU), the ASUU chapter has criticized the state government for failing to implement a salary increase of 25% to 35%, which was approved in January 2023. According to ASUU- LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Secretary Sylvester Idowu, this issue has left academic staff frustrated. They added, ” It is disappointing that while this increment has been implemented in federal universities and 18 other state universities, LASU staff have been left out. ”
The union also highlighted long- standing salary disparities between LASU staff and those at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), calling for urgent action.
As this situation unfolds, students and stakeholders across affected universities are left wondering how long this impasse will last. Many hope for a swift resolution to avoid prolonged academic disruption.
