Additional information has come to light regarding the circumstances that led to the sealing of the entrance gate to the palace of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II of Kano on Friday, and while the Nigeria Police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, a trustworthy source has revealed that this action was undertaken by law enforcement agencies with the primary objective of preventing any potential disruption of peace and order in Bichi town, where the Emir was intended to install a new district head.
According to an anonymous informant, the residents of Bichi had allegedly devised plans to obstruct this installation ceremony, which caused concern among security forces who swiftly intervened to ensure that the Emir of Kano would be unable to attend the event. Furthermore, it was believed that this preemptive measure was also aimed at deterring notable figures from traveling to Bichi for the same occasion.
Reports from Sunday Tribune indicate that a significant number of Bichi residents expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed installation, questioning the justification for appointing a district head rather than retaining their previous status. Some locals conveyed their feelings to our correspondent, asserting that the installation was perceived as a demotion for their town.
They argued that following the dismissal of the five Emirate councils established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, the current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf appointed second- class emirs for three of those councils while Bichi town was notably excluded from this arrangement. Consequently, the residents articulated that their planned opposition to the Friday installation stemmed from the perception that their kingdom had been reduced to being governed by a mere district head, in stark contrast to the other towns that were similarly affected and are now presided over by second- class emirs.
Some stakeholders who spoke confidentially to Sunday Tribune acknowledged that the police’ s decisive action might have inadvertently averted a significant crisis in Bichi, which could have potentially spread to other communities and even the state capital. It is worth noting that by 7 a. m. on Friday, heavily armed police forces had already established a strong presence at the entrance to Emir Sanusi’ s Kofar Kudu palace, underscoring the seriousness of the unfolding situation.
