NNAMDI KANU To Regain Freedom Before Dec 25th? SEE What US Army Veterans Want Igbo Leaders To Do
A coalition of U. S. – based military veterans of Igbo heritage, operating under the banner of the American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), has called on Southeast Nigerian leaders to unite in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Since Kanu’ s controversial extradition in June 2021, AVID has consistently advocated for his freedom, emphasizing the need for collective action within the Igbo community.
In an open letter signed by AVID’ s President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia, and Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the group expressed frustration with the judicial system, asserting that legal channels have failed to deliver justice for Kanu. They urged Igbo leaders to engage President Bola Tinubu in finding a political solution to the issue and securing Kanu’ s freedom.
The letter stated, ” The time has come for the global Igbo community to demand, openly and unequivocally, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ensures Nnamdi Kanu’ s immediate release. The courts have clearly shown an inability to uphold the principles of justice and the rule of law in this case. ”
Specifically, the veterans called on Southeast leaders, including the five governors of the region, to honor their public commitments by initiating discussions with President Tinubu. The group stressed the urgency of convening a meeting through the Southeast Governors Forum (SEGF) to address the matter, warning that any further inaction could suggest complicity in Kanu’ s ongoing detention.
They added, ” If reports are true that a particular Southeast governor is obstructing Kanu’ s release due to fears of political rivalry or ambition, such concerns are unfounded. Nnamdi Kanu has no political interest or intent to disrupt anyone’ s ambitions. We assure this individual and others that Kanu’ s release will not interfere with their political goals, and AVID will stand against any such interference. ”
AVID specifically called on Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to take the initiative and meet with President Tinubu regarding Kanu’ s release, especially if other leaders choose not to act. This responsibility is even more significant as Kanu hails from Abia State.
The AVID members expressed confidence that with decisive political action from Southeast leaders, Nnamdi Kanu’ s release could be achieved before December 25.
