The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated claims that Dr Ngozi Orabueze, the Biafra Chief of Staff, remains unable to leave Finland after purportedly declaring the independence of the United States of Biafra (USB). This development follows a controversial five- day gathering of Biafra supporters in Lahti, Finland, from 29 November to 3 December.
Dr Orabueze, alongside supporters of Simon Ekpa— the self- proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile— declared the USB’ s independence during the convention. Simon Ekpa, who is currently detained in Finland on terrorism- related charges, was absent from the event, leaving Dr Orabueze to lead the announcement.
In response to the declaration, IPOB has distanced itself from both the announcement and the individuals involved. The group described Simon Ekpa and his faction as fraudsters exploiting the Biafra cause for personal gain. IPOB has maintained that the Biafra struggle is rooted in non- violent advocacy for self- determination and has denounced the activities of Ekpa’ s faction as misleading and illegitimate.
IPOB has alleged that Finnish authorities have seized Dr Orabueze’ s travel documents, preventing her from leaving the country. The group claims this is a consequence of her role in the declaration, insisting she remains ” stuck in Finland. ”

However, supporters of Simon Ekpa and the USB declaration have dismissed IPOB’ s assertions. They argue that Dr Orabueze has already returned to the United States, where she is based. According to them, the claims of travel restrictions are baseless and part of IPOB’ s attempt to undermine their movement.
Despite this, IPOB remains steadfast, challenging Dr Orabueze to provide video evidence from a recognisable location in the U. S. to refute their claims.
