The enforcement of an eviction notice served to the Hausa community around the Aduwawa bypass, Benin- Auchi Expressway, Ikpoba- Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, turned violent on Monday, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Tensions between the local Benin people and the Hausa residents reached a boiling point as the demolition exercise to clear the area was carried out. Eyewitnesses recount a harrowing scene as the bulldozers moved in to demolish the structures of the Hausa community, who had reportedly resisted the eviction order.
One of the Hausa men, allegedly trying to confront the demolition, was caught in the chaos and lost his life. While some witnesses claim the man was crushed by the bulldozer, others suggest he was struck by a passing trailer, further complicating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The fatality set off a violent reaction from the Hausa residents, who, in a state of rage, launched attacks on vehicles and businesses in the area. Property was destroyed, and the streets descended into mayhem. The violence spread throughout the night and continued into Tuesday morning, as groups of Hausa individuals clashed with local residents and security forces.
The clashes have highlighted deep- rooted ethnic tensions between the Benin indigenes and the Hausa community, with locals adamant that the Hausa people must leave. Leaders of the Benin community have called for the immediate evacuation of the Hausa, claiming that the eviction is necessary for the development of the area.
