The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly advised former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to refrain from any involvement in the upcoming Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership election. The group emphasized that this electoral process is strictly an internal issue of the Igbo people and should not be influenced by outsiders.
This statement from IPOB follows reports that certain individuals are planning to meet Obasanjo at his Otta Farm to seek his input on the leadership contest. IPOB has condemned such actions, arguing that the Igbo community should independently determine the leadership of their apex socio- cultural organization.
In a press release issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB stressed that the leadership selection process must adhere to the constitutional framework of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The group pointed out that the organization’ s constitution mandates rotational leadership, ensuring that different Igbo states take turns in producing the President- General. IPOB insisted that it is now the turn of Rivers State Igbos to provide a credible candidate for the position.
The pro- Biafra organization also voiced its concerns about alleged attempts by certain factions within Ohanaeze Ndigbo to manipulate the electoral process and marginalize Igbos from specific regions. IPOB warned that any such exclusionary tactics would not only violate the founding principles of the organization but also jeopardize the unity and solidarity of Ndigbo.
According to IPOB, the integrity of Ohanaeze Ndigbo depends on its ability to uphold justice, equity, and fairness in all its dealings. The group called on stakeholders to prioritize the selection of a competent and representative leader, rather than succumbing to political maneuvering or external pressures. It urged all parties to ensure that the election process is transparent and respects the rotational leadership principle outlined in the organization’ s constitution.
Additionally, IPOB cautioned non- Igbo stakeholders, including Obasanjo, to respect the autonomy of the Igbo community and refrain from meddling in matters that are purely cultural and regional. The group emphasized that external interference could undermine the credibility of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and provoke unnecessary tension within the Igbo community.
As the election approaches, IPOB has called on Igbos to remain vigilant and united in protecting the integrity of the leadership process.
