NO More NAIRA? Biafra Govt Unveils Biafran Currency In The S’East Following Independence Declaration
Reports have emerged that the Biafra government in exile has announced plans to phase out the use of the Nigerian naira in the South- East. This development comes on the heels of their independence redeclaration in Finland. The Biafra government unveiled a new currency called the Biafra pound, which they claim is equivalent to 2, 743 naira.
The announcement has sparked a mix of reactions, with some hailing it as a bold move towards independence, while others have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a plan.
Recall that prior to his arrest, Simon Ekpa, a key figure in the Biafra movement, had been at the forefront of this initiative, urging Biafrans to invest in the new currency.
The Biafra government’ s decision to introduce its own currency is seen as a significant step towards asserting its independence from Nigeria.
However, it remains to be seen how this move will play out in practical terms, given the complexities of establishing a viable currency.
Critics have pointed out that the Biafra pound is not recognized by any international financial institutions, and its value is not backed by any tangible assets. Moreover, the process of introducing a new currency is a complex one, requiring significant infrastructure and institutional support.
Despite these challenges, the Biafra government claim it is committed to its vision of an independent Biafra.
