Ohaneze Ndi Igbo has publicly declared its disconnection from Simon Ekpa, a pro- Biafran activist, emphasizing that the only individual recognized as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is Nnamdi Kanu. This assertion was made by Damian Okeke- Ogene, Vice President of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Worldwide, during a press conference held on Saturday.
The organization expressed its deep concern regarding the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, highlighting that his release is crucial for restoring peace in the Igbo region. Okeke- Ogene affirmed the importance of Kanu’ s leadership, stating, ” The emergence of so- called leaders from various quarters has not come to our attention. We continue to support Nnamdi Kanu and believe that upon his release, he will clarify the roles of those working with him, as this is not a one- man movement. He remains an integral part of us; he is our own. ”
Addressing the issue of Ekpa, Okeke- Ogene stated that the controversial figure is not recognized by Ohaneze, which remains focused on Kanu’ s release. He remarked, ” Simon Ekpa is unknown to me and to Ohaneze Ndi Igbo. Our primary concern is Nnamdi Kanu’ s freedom, which would greatly benefit the people of Igbo land. ”
Okeke- Ogene further elaborated on the leadership dynamics within IPOB, noting, ” In any organized structure, there must be a recognized leader. Numerous individuals are claiming to represent IPOB, but the only IPOB we acknowledge is led by Nnamdi Kanu. ” He criticized the notion of supporting individuals like Ekpa, questioning their legitimacy and efficacy, particularly in light of the challenges facing the Southeastern economy.
” We should be wary of putting our trust in leaders who have shown a capacity to harm our economy and community, ” he cautioned. ” If Ekpa’ s views genuinely resonate with the vision of Biafra, it’ s clear that many would not wish to be associated with such a representation. ”
Okeke- Ogene made light of Ekpa’ s self- identification as a content creator, suggesting his claims lack serious substance. ” How can we regard someone who describes himself as a content creator with any seriousness? He seems to belong more to the realm of Nollywood, aiming to deceive rather than lead, ” he stated. This characterization illustrates the disdain many in Ohaneze feel towards Ekpa and his claims of leadership.
Additionally, Ohaneze dismissed rumors of a leadership crisis following the passing of its previous president, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Okeke- Ogene reaffirmed that the next president of Ohaneze will come from Imo State, thereby fulfilling the allocation previously assigned to the state. He urged all Igbo- speaking regions to respect this directive and allow Imo State to complete its designated slot in the organization’ s leadership structure, reinforcing a commitment to unity and continuity within the group.
