Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the foremost socio- cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has strongly condemned Simon Ekpa’ s proclamation of a sovereign Biafran nation scheduled for December 2, 2024. The group dismissed the declaration as both futile and reckless, accusing Ekpa of exploiting social media to incite unnecessary tension in an already fragile region. Ohanaeze emphasized that neither Ekpa nor his associates have the authority or legitimacy to speak for the Southeast or the wider Igbo community.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze criticized the actions of Ekpa’ s faction, describing them as reckless and destructive. According to the organization, such declarations only serve to heighten insecurity and instability in the Southeast, undermining efforts to address the region’ s pressing issues. Ohanaeze asserted that Ekpa’ s unilateral moves reflect a lack of understanding of the complexities involved in achieving self- determination and a disregard for the socio- economic consequences of his actions.
The group further highlighted the detrimental impact of Ekpa’ s activities over the past three years. They noted that his actions, particularly his promotion of sit- at- home orders and other forms of civil disobedience, have significantly disrupted the region’ s economy. Businesses have been forced to shut down, investors have fled, and the once- thriving Southeast has suffered devastating economic losses. Ohanaeze estimates that these activities have resulted in over ₦34 trillion in lost investment opportunities across the Southeast’ s 95 local government areas.
Ohanaeze painted a grim picture of the consequences of Ekpa’ s campaigns. Once a hub of economic prosperity, the Southeast has witnessed the exodus of businesses, leaving behind a vacuum of opportunities. This decline in economic activity has contributed to rising unemployment, poverty, and insecurity, further deepening the challenges faced by the region.
The organization expressed concerns that Ekpa’ s actions have not only harmed the Igbo people but have also tarnished the image of the Biafran struggle on an international scale. By promoting unilateral and unauthorized actions, they argued, Ekpa and his followers are undermining the credibility of legitimate efforts to address the grievances of the Igbo people through dialogue and lawful means.
Ohanaeze concluded by calling on all Igbo people to reject divisive elements and work together toward addressing the region’ s challenges through peaceful and constructive engagement.
