In a statement shared by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike accused Ekpa of using deceitful tactics to exploit his supporters for financial gain.
Simon Ekpa, who was recently detained in Finland on terrorism- related charges, has faced increasing scrutiny over his activities, including allegations of inciting violence in Nigeria’ s southeastern region. Finnish authorities revealed that Ekpa utilized social media to promote separatist propaganda, leading to unrest and acts of violence in the country. He was subsequently jailed for these offenses.
Wike criticized Ekpa’ s questionable claims, including the purported creation of a Biafran national football team. ” He claimed the team was approved to compete in global tournaments, but no one asked if these tournaments were FIFA- sanctioned or recognized, ” Wike said, emphasizing that such assertions are part of Ekpa’ s alleged schemes to defraud his followers.
The minister also highlighted Ekpa’ s questionable identity, noting his real name as Ifeanyi Njoku and questioning his means of livelihood in Finland. ” What work was he doing while in Finland? Was his income solely derived from the donations he collected under the guise of supporting IPOB causes? ” Wike asked.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has disowned Ekpa, distancing itself from his activities and branding him a destructive agent working against its peaceful efforts. IPOB accused Ekpa of forming a violent group, the Biafra Liberation Army, which has allegedly committed several atrocities in Nigeria’ s southeastern states. The group maintains that Ekpa has never been an official member of IPOB and has exploited innocent Biafrans for personal gain
This development has sparked renewed concerns about the impact of separatist agitators operating from abroad. Wike’ s remarks add to the growing criticism of Ekpa, whose actions have not only discredited IPOB’ s image but also contributed to heightened tensions and violence in Nigeria’ s southeast.
