The Eastern Nigeria Development Association (ENDA) has alleged that Northern leaders may have struck a covert deal with President Bola Tinubu to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains in detention permanently.
According to Charles Obinna Chukwunaru, ENDA’ s President, this alleged arrangement serves to obstruct the South- East from producing Nigeria’ s President in 2023. He outlined this claim in a document titled ‘ NIGERIA: That There May Be Peace and Progress. ‘
Warning of Imminent National Collapse
Chukwunaru cautioned that Nigeria faces the risk of a violent disintegration, driven by the desire of various ethnic groups to divide the country.
He stated: ” Currently, the fragile and fragmented Nigerian state teeters on the edge of a violent collapse, as a significant portion of its ethnic groups seek separation based on religious, cultural, political, and geopolitical differences. ”
The ENDA leader argued that the aspirations for self- determination, widely held across several Nigerian ethnicities, are encapsulated in the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu. He further speculated that the northern political elite, under former President Muhammadu Buhari, may have reached a secret arrangement with Bola Tinubu to detain Kanu as a trade- off for Tinubu’ s 2023 presidential victory.
” This alleged agreement, ” he added, ” is viewed as an attempt to suppress the aspirations of the Igbo people and the broader Biafran community. ”
Chukwunaru emphasized the devastating effects of a potential Nigerian state failure.
” The chaos, destruction, and human suffering resulting from such a collapse would be beyond comprehension, creating an unprecedented crisis of internally displaced persons and refugees. ”
He urged peace advocates worldwide to demand Kanu’ s immediate release. He proposed three possible solutions: adhering to the Nigerian courts’ order for Kanu’ s release, restructuring Nigeria under the 1963 republican constitution, or organizing a globally supervised referendum to determine the country’ s unity.
” It is time to choose: either uphold the ideals of Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress as enshrined in Nigeria’ s national coat of arms and anthem or face the reality of a peaceful referendum— or worse, a total collapse of the Nigerian state. The question remains, ‘ Which way, Nigeria? ‘ “
