In a move that could reshape Nigeria’ s political landscape, former vice president and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, alongside Labour Party (LP) flag bearer, Peter Obi, is reportedly discussing the formation of a new political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources say the discussions also involve former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El- Rufai, signaling a possible significant political realignment.
Reports reveal that Atiku and Obi recently held a meeting to explore the idea of adopting a fresh political platform. Their next scheduled meeting is set for Saturday, November 30, in Yola, Adamawa State, where Obi will deliver a keynote speech during an event marking Atiku’ s 78th birthday. The ceremony, hosted at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), owned by Atiku, is reportedly aimed at showcasing their ongoing camaraderie.
A spokesperson for the two leaders confirmed that a potential merger is under consideration but declined to provide further details. This collaboration appears to be a response to challenges both leaders face within their respective parties.
The PDP has been battling internal crises, with its interim chairman, Umar Damagum, aligning with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who has openly criticized Atiku and supported Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections. Similarly, the Labour Party has struggled with internal discord, with Obi’ s relationship with the party chairman, Julius Abure, reportedly deteriorating.
