Delta Women Block Roads, Dance Half- Naked On The Streets; See Why They’re Protesting
Many women in a community in Delta State embarked on a protest to express their heartfelt towards the situation of their community. The protest halted the daily activities of many residents as the protesters blocked roads and danced in different streets. The protesters include young girls in the community. The reason they were protesting was not affecting only the females, it was also affecting the men in the community.
Women and girls numbering over 500 stormed the streets to protest over the incessant kidnapping and the insecurity in the community. The protesters are from the Abraka community, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The protest was mainly targeted at the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area, SP Fabian Ayameh.
In the protest, the women were chanting songs of frustration and they could be seeing will placards with different inscriptions such as ” End Kidnapping in Abraka, ” ” Enough is Enough, ” ” DPO Must Go, ” and ” Hardship Is Unbearable” . The inscriptions say it all, they called for the removal of the DPO as they accused him of not addressing the incessant cases of kidnapping and the insecurity. They also called the State government for urgent action to address the kidnapping and worsening security situation of the community.
The protest took place on Monday and it halted activities as the women barricaded the busy Abraka junction, leaving motorists and passengers stranded. As they were singing and dancing half- naked, they also accused the police of extorting young boys to fund their alleged extravagant lifestyles. What the women are fighting for are issues that concern every member of the community.
A preliminary investigation revealed that there have been frequent attacks by gunmen and criminals as well as abductions in the community for a long time. The criminal activities reportedly happen almost every day and it is affecting the economy and social development of the community.
