The Edo State Government has launched a determined effort to recover over 200 missing government vehicles reportedly unaccounted for under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. Current Governor Monday Okpebholo has established a 12- member committee, chaired by Kelly Okungbowa, to lead the recovery mission.
The committee has been given a two- week deadline to locate and return the vehicles, believed to be in the possession of Obaseki’ s aides and associates. Within the first 24 hours of its formation, the team successfully retrieved three vehicles: a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses. One of the recovered buses contained palliatives meant for Edo residents, including bags of 10kg and 25kg rice and garri.
Addressing journalists, Okungbowa highlighted the importance of returning government property to its rightful owners— the people of Edo State. ” These vehicles are not private property, ” he stated. ” We urge anyone in possession of them to return them within 48 hours. Whistleblowers who provide credible information will be handsomely rewarded. ”
The recovery process began with one private residence, where the three vehicles were found. Okungbowa expressed concern about the remaining unaccounted- for vehicles and assured the public that the committee would intensify its search based on credible tips. ” We are just starting, ” he said. ” Our team is moving to other identified locations, and we will leave no stone unturned. ”
The discovery of palliatives in one of the vehicles underscores a troubling misuse of resources intended to alleviate hardship among residents. Okungbowa reaffirmed the committee’ s commitment to conducting its mandate lawfully, with the support of security agencies ensuring smooth operations.
