The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a statement following the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a self- proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile. Ekpa, who has been an outspoken advocate for the secession of southeastern Nigeria, was detained by Finnish authorities on charges linked to public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.
IPOB, in a post on social media platform X, expressed suspicion over the circumstances surrounding Ekpa’ s arrest. The group noted that some of his followers, who had contributed financially towards his planned declaration of Biafra independence on December 2, are questioning whether Ekpa’ s detention was orchestrated to shield him from accountability. They suggested that this move might be an attempt by Ekpa to avoid blame from his supporters for the failed independence declaration.

In a related development, the Finnish District Court in Lahti issued a detention order for Ekpa on Thursday, citing probable cause for his involvement in public incitement with terrorist intent. Authorities accuse Ekpa of using social media platforms to spread separatist propaganda linked to IPOB, a group advocating for the secession of Nigeria’ s southeastern region. The charges are said to date back to August 2021.
The Finnish authorities also allege that Ekpa may have been involved in financial crimes, including raising funds through questionable means. Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen of Finland’ s Central Criminal Police stated that the authorities believe Ekpa’ s actions from Finland have led to violence in Nigeria’ s southeastern region. He noted that Ekpa’ s social media activities were central to his role in promoting separatism and inciting violence.
Ekpa’ s arrest marks a significant point in a wider investigation into terrorism financing, which also involves four other suspects. These individuals are believed to have committed crimes related to financing terrorism in August 2022.
The suspects, who are of foreign origin and were born in the 1960s and 1970s, were arrested in Lahti during the first week of the investigation. This investigation, according to reports from Helsingin Sanomat, highlights the importance of international cooperation in dealing with the growing concerns of extremist activities.
Ekpa was previously arrested in February 2023 in a private apartment in Lahti but was released the same evening after questioning. At that time, authorities revealed they had received multiple reports regarding Ekpa’ s online activities, leading to the current investigation.
Simon Ekpa is a local politician in Finland, affiliated with the National Coalition Party. He has served as a deputy councilor and represented the party on the Lahti region’ s public transport board.
However, his notoriety has grown outside of Finland due to his outspoken support for Biafra’ s independence. From his base in Lahti, Ekpa has used his social media platforms to call for boycotts of Nigerian elections and to rally support for Biafra’ s cause.
