In a tragic incident in Abeokuta, Ogun State, a former councillor was shot and killed on Friday evening, allegedly by gunmen believed to be linked to cult activities. The victim, identified as Mutiu Akinbami, known locally as Egor, was targeted while riding a motorcycle with his son near the Brewery area, a popular location in the state capital.
The shooting occurred around 6: 30 PM, between the Brewery Bus Stop and the Olomoore Junction. According to a source familiar with the situation, the assailants had been tracking Akinbami from his residence in the Olomoore Federal Housing Estate. They arrived at the scene in a tinted white Toyota Hilux, and upon catching up to Akinbami, they opened fire, striking him in the head.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the details of the incident through its spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, who issued a statement to the press on Saturday. She noted that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Lafenwa received information about the shooting shortly after it occurred, around 6: 40 PM. The report indicated that Akinbami was ambushed while riding home on his motorcycle and was shot from behind by one of the masked individuals in the unregistered vehicle.
Following the shooting, the DPO quickly dispatched patrol units to the area, and the victim was rushed to Ijaiye General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. The police spokesperson also revealed that initial investigations suggest Akinbami had affiliations with the Eiye confraternity, a known cult group. He had previously held a prominent position at the Federal College of Education Osiele in Abeokuta and was reportedly wanted by law enforcement.
As the investigation progresses, police have made several arrests in connection with the case, and further updates are expected as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the murder. The incident adds to a troubling trend of violence linked to cult groups in the region, raising concerns among residents about safety and security.
