The Nigerian National Grid experienced another unexpected collapse on Thursday, November 7, 2024, casting the nation into darkness once more. This event marks the second grid failure within just three days, with the previous breakdown occurring on Tuesday, November 5. The grid’ s recurring instability has sparked frustration and concern among Nigerians, as the country’ s energy sector continues to grapple with consistent power supply issues.
Confirming the latest collapse, the grid’ s management took to their official social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter, @NationalGridNg, to announce: ” BREAKING: Another Grid Setback Experienced. ” This announcement has reignited discussions around Nigeria’ s power infrastructure and the underlying issues plaguing its electricity distribution.
Following the Tuesday incident, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) pointed fingers at Nigeria’ s electricity distribution companies, commonly referred to as Discos. According to the NOA, these distribution companies are rejecting a significant portion of the electricity produced, which is a major cause of the frequent grid collapses. The NOA noted that the Discos have been unable to handle the full capacity of electricity generated due to infrastructural limitations, resulting in regular interruptions to the power grid.
Adding to the discourse, the Federal Government recently disclosed additional details highlighting the role of outdated infrastructure and lack of sufficient maintenance. According to government representatives, these factors exacerbate the grid’ s instability, making it prone to frequent collapses. This acknowledgment has led to the establishment of an investigative committee tasked with examining the root causes of the grid’ s failures and recommending solutions.
Nafisatu Asabe Ali, Chairperson of the investigative committee, presented a report at the Ministry of Power’ s headquarters in Abuja, shedding light on the October grid collapses. The committee found that incidents on October 14 and 19, which also led to nationwide blackouts, were due to equipment failures caused by excessive voltage. Ali revealed that lightning arrestors at both the Jebba and Oshogbo transmission stations failed during this period, leading to significant power outages. Furthermore, an explosion at a current transformer at the Jebba station also contributed to the disruption.
The committee’ s investigation revealed that equipment across multiple transmission stations is old, insufficient, and unable to withstand sudden voltage spikes. These aging components create a fragile system where even minor equipment failures lead to large- scale blackouts. The report emphasized that both government agencies and Discos must urgently address these deficiencies to restore stability to the national grid.
