A shocking tragedy unfolded in the Umuediabali community of Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State, when a 55- year- old widow, Eucharia Chidi Obasi, was reportedly murdered by a suspected ritualist who also mutilated her body.
Local sources revealed that the incident took place on Wednesday night, when the assailant entered the widow’ s home, abducted her, and carried out a brutal attack that included the severing of body parts.
Following the initial attack, the suspect allegedly attempted to assault another woman in the vicinity. Fortunately, she managed to raise an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors. The community quickly responded, overpowering and fatally beating the suspect before security forces arrived.
One witness recounted, ” The assailant came around midnight, took her from her apartment, and then mutilated her body, cutting off her breasts and other private parts. ” The gruesome attack has left the community in shock, and local authorities are expected to increase security efforts in the area.
In the wake of the incident, the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) condemned the killing. AfAW’ s Executive Director, Leo Igwe, issued a statement decrying the role of superstition and ritualistic beliefs in such heinous acts.
” Ms. Obasi’ s brutal killing underscores the dangerous belief in human sacrifice among some Nigerians, ” he said, calling on citizens to abandon harmful superstitions and embrace reason and critical thinking.
Ahiazu Mbaise, a local government area comprising 14 towns, has seen rising concern over ritualistic attacks. Local leaders and human rights organizations are urging residents to collaborate with law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
