The Director- General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, has refuted allegations linking her to efforts in securing a $57. 5 billion loan from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on behalf of the Biafra Republic government. These claims surfaced on social media, particularly following a tweet attributed to Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the Biafran secessionist movement. The tweet falsely asserted that Okonjo- Iweala had agreed to assist in obtaining the loan for the Biafran government, supposedly to aid in its formation after December 2024.
The social media post stirred significant reactions, especially given Okonjo- Iweala’ s global standing as a respected economist and international diplomat. However, the former Nigerian finance minister wasted no time in addressing the allegations, which she dismissed as entirely baseless. In a firm statement released via her X (formerly Twitter) account, Okonjo- Iweala categorically denied any involvement in such activities and warned against the misuse of her name in connection with unfounded claims.
In her post, she wrote, ” I know no sensible person will believe what is contained in the outrageous tweet below, but in these troubled times, it is important to underscore that the statement is false. Again, I enjoin all those seeking to misuse my name to desist! ”
Okonjo- Iweala’ s response not only emphasized the implausibility of the claim but also reflected her frustration with how false information can be spread quickly on social media platforms. With disinformation and fabricated stories becoming increasingly common, particularly in politically charged environments like Nigeria’ s, the WTO chief took the opportunity to underscore the need for discernment among the public.
Simon Ekpa, who has been a vocal advocate for the Biafran cause and is considered a key leader within the secessionist movement, reacted to Okonjo- Iweala’ s post, claiming that he had never made the alleged statement. In his response, Ekpa expressed surprise at her reaction, noting that while her name had been used in the tweet, his focus had been on drawing attention to alleged atrocities committed by the Nigerian government against the Biafran people.
” Dear Madam @NOIweala, I never tweeted such. It is even surprising that you can tweet this because your name was mentioned. We have been tweeting about the Nigerian terrorism against your people, and you never responded nor showed any remorse, ” Ekpa stated.
He further criticized Okonjo- Iweala for, in his view, being quick to defend her personal integrity when falsehoods involving her name surfaced, yet remaining silent on the violence and killings he attributed to the Nigerian government. Ekpa’ s response took a somewhat sarcastic tone, as he wrote, ” Here you are, defending what nonentities did with your name, but you have been mute about all the killings by the government you served. I congratulate you for always defending yourself and your integrity, even when they are photoshopped. It shows you are really a mother. ”
His remarks sought to paint Okonjo- Iweala as prioritizing her reputation over the plight of the Biafran people, a common narrative within the secessionist discourse. However, the accusation failed to address the crux of the matter— namely, that the tweet attributed to Ekpa had propagated false information, which Okonjo- Iweala was compelled to discredit publicly.
The controversy surrounding the Biafran movement, which seeks the independence of the southeastern region of Nigeria, remains a highly sensitive issue in the country. Calls for the creation of the Biafra Republic have gained renewed momentum in recent years, largely driven by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group led by Nnamdi Kanu, and his associate, Simon Ekpa. These groups argue that the people of the southeast have been marginalized by the Nigerian state and are entitled to self- determination.
Despite the passionate calls for secession, the Nigerian government has consistently reiterated its commitment to maintaining the country’ s unity.
