The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing sit- at- home orders that continue to disrupt economic activities in the South- East region. The youth group is calling on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the matter by releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a way to end the persistent unrest in the area.
On Monday, various parts of the region witnessed a partial shutdown, with businesses, markets, and transportation services affected due to the sit- at- home order. These orders, which are frequently enforced by unknown individuals, have caused significant chaos and economic stagnation in the region. Despite the continued disruption, both IPOB and the Simon Ekpa- led Biafra Republic Government In- Exile, who were initially linked to the orders, have publicly distanced themselves from the latest one.
COSEYL, in a statement released by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, expressed the frustration and hardship the people in the South- East are enduring due to these enforced shutdowns. Ibem condemned the anonymous nature of these orders, stating, ” We cannot continue like this as a people. This madness must stop. ” According to him, these sit- at- home orders, which usually come in the form of voice notes or videos shared online by unknown persons, are damaging the region’ s economy and hurting the livelihoods of millions.
The youth coalition has also urged President Tinubu to act swiftly by releasing Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). They believe this will help put an end to the exploitation of Kanu’ s detention by these faceless individuals. ” We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to consider the release of Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody to put a stop to all forms of economic sabotage which are injurious to the growth and development of the nation, ” Ibem added.
