Residents of Anambra State have been thrown into chaos following a deadly clash between rival cult groups. Reports from Daily Report Nigeria indicate that numerous lives were lost, and several others were left severely injured in the aftermath of the violence.
The cult clash, which erupted in the Nibo community and Nodu- Okpuno Village within Awka South Local Government Area, has deeply unsettled the region. The incident occurred during the community’ s New Yam festival, commonly referred to as the ‘ Nibo Onwa Asaa festival, ‘ a time usually marked by celebration but now overshadowed by tragedy.
Eyewitnesses recount the horrific sequence of events, with one individual, identified as Matthias Ugwoke, stating that the violence broke out when members of a cult attacked a bar where a rival cult member was present. In a brazen assault, they opened fire on the individual, resulting in the death of eight people. This gruesome event, which took place on Sunday, October 20, quickly spiraled out of control. Chilling videos of the incident were soon circulated online, depicting lifeless bodies scattered across different parts of the community, further heightening the tension.
Another witness, who chose to remain anonymous, described how the assailants, numbering around five, arrived at the bar in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep. Without warning, they began shooting, killing eight people on the spot. After this deadly attack, the gunmen proceeded to Eke Nibo Market, where they claimed the lives of five more individuals. ” Nibo is in turmoil, ” the source said, describing the scene of lifeless bodies strewn across the roads. Some victims were caught in the crossfire, while others sustained various degrees of injuries as the violence raged on.
As the day progressed, the situation only worsened. The cult clash, which erupted during the New Yam festival, led to more casualties. The eyewitness estimated that over 13 bodies had been recovered from different locations, sparking widespread panic as residents fled to escape the violence. Gunfire could be heard throughout the area, amplifying the sense of fear and confusion.
