Gunmen, suspected to be hired assassins, have taken the life of a middle- aged man, Abdulrafiu Afegbua, who was widely known by his nickname, Uroy. This tragic event took place in the Awoyemi community, which is located in Okpella, within the Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred on the night of October 5, 2024. Afegbua, who was at home with his wife, received a phone call that seemed urgent and prompted him to leave the safety of his home. The nature of the call, as gathered from reports, was such that Afegbua felt compelled to respond immediately, despite the late hour.
His wife, sensing danger or perhaps simply worried about the time of night, urged her husband not to go. She made repeated attempts to convince him to remain at home, given the lateness of the hour and potential risks. However, it seemed the caller had managed to convince him otherwise. Without giving in to his wife’ s pleas, Afegbua quickly rushed out of the house to meet the person at the other end of the phone.
Sadly, it was this decision that led to his untimely death. Upon arriving at the agreed- upon location, Afegbua was ambushed by gunmen lying in wait. The armed attackers targeted him with precision, shooting him both in the chest and the neck. The brutal attack left him critically injured, and he succumbed to his wounds almost immediately, dying on the spot.
Afegbua’ s lifeless body was found in a bush not far from his home. His body lay just a short distance from where his motorbike had been abandoned along a nearby path. This suggested that the attackers struck shortly after he left to meet his caller. The location of his bike and the proximity of his body indicated that the ambush was premeditated and carefully orchestrated.
The discovery of Afegbua’ s corpse plunged the community into mourning, as the senseless killing left many in shock. His death, shrouded in mystery, has raised questions about who was responsible for the heinous crime and what motive lay behind the assassination.
Confirming the tragic event, SP Moses Yamu, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, stated that the police were aware of the incident and had already launched an investigation. The authorities are currently working to gather more information and to track down the culprits responsible for Afegbua’ s death. According to the police, the investigation remains ongoing, and all efforts are being made to ensure that those behind the assassination are brought to justice.
