The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has revealed a concerning fact about the proliferation of illegal weapons in Nigeria. According to Ribadu, a significant portion of these illicit arms currently circulating within the country were once the property of the Federal Government. This revelation highlights the serious issue of how government- controlled weapons have ended up in the possession of unauthorized individuals and groups, posing a threat to national security.
Ribadu made this statement on Thursday during an arms destruction exercise organized by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW). The event, which took place at the Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Abuja, was part of ongoing efforts to address the growing threat posed by the widespread availability of small arms and light weapons across the country. The NSA emphasized the critical role of this initiative in curbing the circulation of dangerous weapons that have fallen into the wrong hands.
In his remarks, Ribadu explained that many of these weapons ended up with non- state actors as a result of corruption within Nigeria’ s security agencies. He condemned the actions of certain corrupt security personnel who have played a part in facilitating the illegal distribution of arms to criminals, including terrorists, bandits, and other violent groups. The NSA expressed dismay at the betrayal by members of the security forces, who are meant to protect the nation but have instead contributed to its insecurity by allowing these weapons to reach unauthorized individuals.
Ribadu reassured Nigerians that the government is committed to addressing this issue and restoring security across the country. He vowed that the authorities will take all necessary steps to prevent further leaks of government- owned weapons into the hands of non- state actors.
The NSA also emphasized that ongoing reforms within the security sector will help to root out corrupt elements and enhance the overall integrity of Nigeria’ s security agencies. This commitment is seen as a vital step towards improving national security and ensuring a safer future for all citizens.
