Some operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have been accused of chasing a Lagos resident whose name is yet-to-be-ascertained into the Lagos Lagoon.
This was disclosed in a series of tweets posted by a user, Omorehemi on Thursday evening.
Omorehemi disclosed that the incident happened on Wednesday morning at Federal Bus Stop in the Iyana Ayobo area of Lagos State.
The X user said: “Yesterday morning, police chased my friend’s husband till he fell into the canal, they took his slippers and money that fell and left when people started shouting. This happened at federal bus stop, Ipaja Ayobo axis. He is currently unconscious at Lasuth @BenHundeyin @PoliceNG.”
As explained in the video, the resident’s fall into the lagoon was compounded by a head injury sustained from hitting a stone.
He said: “It was the police that chased inside till he fell inside the lagoon. We were only trying to rescue him. It was the police that chased him. They chased him this morning (on Wednesday). He hit his head on the hard stone. Money fell from his pocket and they took it.”
Efforts to reach the spokesman for the Lagos State police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmation, comments and an update failed as he did not answer his calls.
Hundeyin confirmed that the officers were conducting an illegal duty and took some civilians along with them but were unfortunately attacked by motorcycle riders, leading to the death of a civilian.
Giving an account of the incident, Hundeyin said, “Two police officers attached to the Lagos State Taskforce on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, went on illegal duty, taking some civilians with them to shore up their numbers. They came under attack from motorcycle riders, resulting in the death of one of the civilians.”
He also said the officers involved would be sanctioned with if found guilty.
