ATTENTION! After CNG Explosion Disaster Injured Several People, SEE Warning FG Issued To Nigerians Over CNG Conversion
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians to only patronize accredited centres for converting their vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), following an incident involving an illegally modified vehicle at a NIPCO CNG station in Benin City, Edo State. This warning was issued on Thursday by the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), citing safety concerns in light of the accident that occurred on October 16, 2024.
The incident, which took place at the NIPCO CNG station located at Ikpoba Hill, resulted in several injuries but no fatalities. According to PCNGI, the vehicle involved had undergone an unauthorized conversion, with its cylinder welded and modified without meeting approved CNG safety standards. The government reiterated the importance of adhering to safety regulations, stressing that using properly certified conversion centres is crucial to preventing such accidents.
The PCNGI also commiserated with those injured, while emphasizing that the safe handling of CNG is as important as handling petrol. ” Patronize only accredited conversion centers, and handle CNG with the same care as petrol to ensure everyone’ s safety, ” the statement read.
In response to the incident, the PCNGI, in coordination with the police and regulatory authorities, has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. NIPCO management is also involved in the probe, aiming to identify any regulatory lapses that may have contributed to the unfortunate event.
The FG’ s warning comes as Nigeria ramps up its efforts to encourage the adoption of CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative under the Presidential CNG Initiative. As part of this initiative, the Federal Government, through the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and other agencies, is set to introduce the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System. This system will monitor vehicle conversions to ensure that safety standards are met, and it will target bad actors who compromise the safety of CNG usage in Nigeria.
As Nigeria continues to transition to a gas- powered transportation system, the government’ s message is clear: safety must remain the top priority, and only certified centres should be entrusted with vehicle conversions.
