Ajuri Ahmed, the National Chairperson of the New Nigeria People’ s Party (NNPP), has suggested that a major coalition of political parties could form to challenge President Bola Tinubu’ s re- election bid in 2027. This remark was made during the NNPP’ s campaign flag- off for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, set for November 16, 2024, in Akure, Ondo State. Ahmed’ s comments highlight growing concerns among opposition parties regarding the ruling All Progressives Congress’ s (APC) dominance in Nigeria’ s political landscape.
While Ahmed did not disclose which political parties are in talks for this potential alliance, he made it clear that discussions are underway to prevent the APC from retaining power beyond 2027. According to him, the NNPP and other opposition parties recognize the need to unite to present a formidable challenge to the ruling party. However, he also cautioned that if these coalition talks do not succeed, the NNPP is fully prepared to contest on its own. ” Our door is open for any coalition ahead of the 2027 election. And if it doesn’ t work, our party is capable of standing on its own, ” Ahmed declared confidently.
The NNPP leader also voiced concerns about potential election manipulation by the APC in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election. He pointed out that the APC, aware of the strength of the opposition, may attempt to sway the election in its favor.

His concerns are rooted in the belief that without safeguards, opposition parties may face an uphill battle to challenge the ruling party’ s grip on power.
