Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has called on ageing political leaders to step aside and allow the younger generation to take charge of the nation’ s future.
Speaking in Abuja during an interview at the 25th annual women’ s conference themed ” Let This Mind Be in You Which Was Also in Christ, ” Ndukuba emphasized that Nigerian youths are prepared to face the challenges of their time and are in the best position to address the issues affecting their generation.
The Archbishop praised President Bola Tinubu for his initiative to organize a national youth conference. In a nationwide address commemorating Nigeria’ s Independence Day, President Tinubu announced that the conference would last for 30 days and serve as a platform for young people to discuss the challenges and opportunities they face.
With over 60% of Nigeria’ s population being youths, the event is expected to focus on finding solutions to the pressing issues confronting the younger generation. Archbishop Ndukuba expressed strong support for this initiative, highlighting the significance of youth leadership in shaping the nation’ s future. He noted that, just as the youth played a vital role in Nigeria’ s pre- independence era, today’ s young people are equally equipped to lead the country forward.
” The youth are ready, and they are the ones who can speak to their generation, ” said Ndukuba. ” They are the ones who can engage with the challenges that are coming in the future. We cannot do it for them. We will always be there to guide, educate, correct, and support them. ”
However, the Archbishop pointed out that the current political landscape in Nigeria often favors the highest bidder, leaving many young people at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources. He stressed that beyond the planned youth conference, older politicians must start transitioning power to the younger generation to give them a fair chance to lead. He expressed hope that political leaders would empower youths to take on leadership roles in the country.
Ndukuba also pledged the full support of the Church for the government’ s efforts in ensuring a smooth transition of power to the youth. He emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment where young leaders can rise and make meaningful contributions to Nigeria’ s development.
