Amid ongoing tensions surrounding the Rivers State Local Government Areas (LGA) elections, former President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a stern warning to all political actors involved.

His statement, released on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), highlighted concerns about the political situation and its potential impact on democracy and national security.
Jonathan expressed deep concern over the political developments in Rivers State, stating, ” The political happenings in Rivers State in the past days is a cause for serious concern for everyone, especially lovers of democracy and all actors within the peace and security sector of our nation. ”
He noted that the local government elections in Rivers State, taking place on October 5, had attracted significant interest from political figures. The former president emphasized the importance of elections as the foundation of democracy.
” Elections are the cornerstone of democracy because they are the primary source of legitimacy. This process renews the faith of citizens in their country as it affords them the opportunity to have a say on who governs them, ” he said.
Jonathan underscored that every election, whether at the national or local level, plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy and giving citizens a voice. Jonathan also stressed the responsibility of all stakeholders, particularly state institutions, to promote a culture of sound democratic practices.
He noted that democracy’ s growth depends on the government’ s commitment to upholding the rule of law and pursuing peace and justice.
