Thousands of Nigerians are expected to gather across major cities on Tuesday to protest against what they describe as the harmful policies and programs under President Bola Tinubu’ s administration.
The protest is set to coincide with Nigeria’ s 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1 and has been called the ” National Day of Survival. ” This event is meant to shine a spotlight on the severe economic hardships affecting millions of Nigerians.
The protest is a direct challenge to the current situation in the country, which many believe is worsening due to poor governance. As the cost of living continues to rise and the economy struggles, the citizens are voicing their frustrations. In response to the difficult economic situation, Tinubu has already called for a more modest celebration of this year’ s Independence Day.
This demonstration follows a series of similar protests held in August under the #EndBadGovernance movement, which took place across several states. The 10- day protests in August called for an end to the government’ s failure to address rising living costs and poor governance. During these protests, the government responded by arresting several protesters, charging at least 10 individuals with treason.
Various activist groups have joined in organizing the October 1 protest, including the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), Joint Action Front (JAF), Alliance on Surviving COVID- 19 and Beyond (ASCAB), and the Yoruba Revolutionary Movement (YOREM), among others. In Lagos, a viral video captured protesters chanting ” Tinubu Ole, Tinubu na Goat, omo Eran” as they moved toward Freedom Park.
Despite the heavy emotions surrounding the event, the protesters have remained peaceful, expressing their dissatisfaction in a calm manner. Security operatives are present at the protests to maintain peace and order.
Several other organizations have also joined in support of the protests, such as the Coalition for Concerned Nigerian Citizens (CCNC), Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), Movement for African Emancipation (MAE), Pan- African Consciousness Renaissance (PACOR- Nigeria), and the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR).

In response to the planned protests, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered increased security measures across the country. The Defence Headquarters also announced that troops are on standby to assist the police in maintaining peace and order during the demonstrations.
These protests come at a critical time, as Nigerians are hoping for meaningful changes to the country’ s leadership and policies in order to alleviate the economic challenges that are affecting their daily lives.
