President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled an ambitious employment scheme designed to create 2. 5 million jobs for Nigerians, both directly and indirectly, as part of his administration’ s efforts to tackle the nation’ s unemployment crisis.
The initiative, known as the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), was announced during his Independence Day address on Tuesday, marking Nigeria’ s 64th anniversary.
The scheme, which is set to launch in October 2024, aims to address unemployment while also ensuring the welfare and safety of Nigerian workers.
Tinubu emphasized that the program is part of a larger set of interventions spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
” In addition, later this month, we shall launch The Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), ” Tinubu said during his speech.
” It is conceived as a comprehensive suite of interventions at job creation by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment that is aimed at facilitating the creation of 2. 5 million jobs, directly and indirectly, on an annual incremental basis whilst simultaneously ensuring the welfare and safety of workers across the country. ”
The LEEP initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with high unemployment rates, exacerbated by economic challenges and inflation.
Many young Nigerians have been particularly affected, and Tinubu’ s government has faced growing pressure to implement programs that will alleviate economic hardship.
According to Tinubu, this conference will allow the voices of Nigerian youths to be heard and will ensure that their recommendations are considered and implemented by his administration.
” The youths of this nation deserve to have their voices heard, and that is why we are organizing this conference, ” Tinubu said.
He added that the event would provide an opportunity to craft solutions that reflect the aspirations of the younger generation, particularly in addressing unemployment and other pressing issues.
” We have been through difficult times, but I assure you, my fellow Nigerians, that the future holds great promise. Let us not lose hope in the country we love, ” Tinubu said in his concluding remarks.
