The apex Igbo socio- cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced that the Southeast region will not participate in the nationwide protests scheduled for October 1, 2024. This declaration was made through a statement issued by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary General of the organization, on Saturday, September 29.
According to Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo is under increasing pressure from the organizers of the protests, which have been labeled ” Fearless and National Survival Day. ” He revealed that these organizers are making determined efforts to draw Southeast residents, as well as Igbo communities in the Northern and Western regions of Nigeria, into supporting and joining the protests.
” These agents, in their desperate attempt, are trying to lure our people from the Southeast, and also those in other parts of the country, to endorse and participate in these protests, ” Isiguzoro stated.
He further revealed that two former presidential candidates from the 2023 elections are secretly coordinating the protests. These candidates, according to Isiguzoro, are using representatives disguised as civil society organizations to push their agenda. The primary goal of these orchestrators, he noted, is to gain the endorsement of the Southeast and Igbo communities for the protests.
However, Isiguzoro pointed out that the Igbo people have been deeply affected by the current economic difficulties in the country, especially due to the recent flotation of the Naira. This policy has severely impacted Igbo importers and traders, making it difficult for them to operate in the current economic environment.
He expressed concerns that the protest organizers are exploiting the ongoing economic hardships to trap Igbo people into joining a movement that could have serious consequences. ” The organizers of these protests are taking advantage of the economic situation to drag our people into a movement that may have grave implications, ” he warned.
In the statement, Ohanaeze Ndigbo issued a clear warning to all Igbo people, both in Nigeria and abroad, to stay away from the planned nationwide protests. ” We want to send a clear message to all Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora: the October 1st protests are a dangerous time bomb set by desperate political elites and opposition leaders. They are trying to use the Igbo people as pawns in their political games. ”
Isiguzoro warned that participating in these protests could worsen the already tense situation in the country, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing economic crisis. He urged the Igbo people to refrain from getting involved, stating that such actions could have negative consequences for the community.
