On Sunday, a large gathering of women in Kogi State took to the streets to express their strong opposition to what they believe is the unjust targeting of former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The demonstration, held in the state capital of Lokoja, was led by prominent community leaders and loyal supporters from various political factions.
The protesters directed their frustrations primarily at the EFCC, accusing the agency of engaging in a politically motivated ” witch- hunt” against Bello. They called on President Bola Tinubu to step in and urge the EFCC to allow the legal process to unfold without undue interference. The women passionately articulated their belief that Bello’ s administration had brought significant benefits to the state, claiming it outperformed those of his predecessors.
Hajiya Halima Abass, one of the vocal participants, stated that they stand firmly with Bello during this challenging period, asserting that he has been unfairly targeted. She emphasized their demand for justice, declaring that they would not sit idly by while he suffers from what they perceive as unjust accusations.
Criticism of the EFCC’ s methods was a common theme among the demonstrators, who argued that the agency should prioritize genuine cases of corruption rather than pursuing what they viewed as personal vendettas. Mrs. Boluwaji highlighted this sentiment, insisting that the EFCC ought to focus on real corruption issues instead of engaging in politically motivated actions. She called for a return to impartiality and professionalism within the agency.
Leaders from various women’ s organizations, speaking in local dialects such as Igala, Ebira, and Yoruba, urged the EFCC to approach Bello’ s case with fairness and integrity. They expressed a united front, stressing that the people of Kogi would not accept what they saw as an orchestrated effort to damage Bello’ s reputation.
The women in attendance passionately expressed their unwavering loyalty to Governor Yahaya Bello and praised his achievements during his time in office. Hajiya Fatima, a spokesperson from Ebiraland, conveyed their gratitude for Bello’ s leadership and called for the EFCC to cease their investigation into the governor’ s affairs.
Similarly, Mrs. Deborah from Kogi East echoed these sentiments, asserting that Bello had never wronged his constituents and urging those seeking to harm him to reconsider their actions. She noted that his governance had been unparalleled in their experience.
The protest culminated in a powerful message: Kogi’ s women remained steadfast in their demand for justice and fairness for Yahaya Bello. They refused to let what they viewed as unfounded accusations tarnish his legacy. One protester encapsulated the collective optimism of the crowd by declaring that he would return unscathed.
