Turji’ s predicament has reached a point where he knows the entire region is against him. Fear now dominates his life, and he appears to be increasingly paranoid, scared even of his own shadow. Recently, in a stark contrast to his past bravado, Turji made a video plea to the people of North West Nigeria, asking for their forgiveness. Once notorious for his confidence, he now sounds like a man losing grip on power, struggling to survive under intense military pressure.
The Nigerian military, confident in their operations, has vowed to capture Turji, just as they had done with other notorious bandits like Halilu Sububu. General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized that Turji is on the run, confused, and facing pressure not only from the military but also from his own associates, who may seek to eliminate him due to the complications he has brought them. The relentless operations have decimated his network, leaving him increasingly isolated and vulnerable.
In a series of recent military offensives, at least seven infamous bandit leaders, each commanding more than 200 fighters, have been neutralized by the Nigerian Army in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and local vigilante groups. These bandit leaders included Kacalla Ɗan Baleri, who had a camp in Batauna village, Shinkafi Local Government Area (LGA); Kacalla Ɗan- Babirki, whose camp was near Rudunu village in Maradun LGA; Kacalla Hana- Zuwa, operating from Jajjaye in the Tubali region, Shinkafi LGA; and Kacalla Adamu and Kachallah Buzu, also known as Sububu, in Maradun LGA. Along with these leaders, dozens of their fighters met their end in the coordinated military operations.
In addition to the military’ s successes, the Nigerian Police Force in Katsina State recently eliminated another notorious bandit leader, Dan Kundu. Kundu, the younger brother of Usman Modi Modi, was known to operate within the Tsatskiya forest in Safana LGA.
He was killed in a clash with law enforcement officers and local vigilantes after an attempted attack in the Kurfi area. Authorities, along with community forces, intercepted Kundu and his group before they could execute their planned assault, resulting in his death and the elimination of several members of his gang.
The joint efforts of the military, police, and local vigilante groups have severely weakened the operational capabilities of these criminal groups, signaling a turning point in the fight against banditry in the region. Turji’ s fate now hangs in the balance as he continues to evade capture, but the pressure on him is mounting, and his days of freedom appear numbered.
