A viral video has surfaced, capturing an altercation between a police officer and an elderly woman in the Alagbado area of Lagos State. The video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the officer manhandling the woman inside her car. The incident reportedly occurred earlier this month.
In the video, the elderly woman can be heard screaming, accusing the officer of demanding ₦250, 000 from her. She claimed that her refusal to pay the bribe led to the violent encounter. The footage has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the officer’ s actions and calling for accountability.
In response to the incident, the Lagos State Police Command issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming that an investigation into the matter has been launched. According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Lagos State Command, a preliminary investigation reveals that the incident took place in the first week of September 2024 in Alagbado.
SP Hundeyin further stated that both the police inspector involved in the incident and his supervising officer, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), have been brought in for questioning. The Police Complaint Response Unit has also made contact with the woman seen in the video to gather more information.
“The Lagos State Police Command totally condemns the unprofessional conduct of the Inspector, as it does not represent the ethics and operational standards of the Nigeria Police Force, ” the statement read.
SP Hundeyin assured the public that the investigation would be conducted swiftly and thoroughly, and the officers involved would face appropriate disciplinary measures. He emphasized that the police are committed to maintaining transparency and will keep the public informed as the investigation progresses.
The video has reignited conversations around police brutality and misconduct in Nigeria, with many citizens calling for reforms within the force. The Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that justice is served in this case.
