On Wednesday, 18th September 2024 Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, corroborated the arrest in a statement to a correspondent, affirming that Tahiru Hamidu was apprehended.
Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly took advantage of the victim’ s vulnerability to repeatedly engage in forced sëxual activities without her consent on several occasions before being arrested by the operatives of the Owode Egba Division on September 12, 2024.
The alleged perpetrator was also charged with menacing the survivor’ s relative, identified only as Shofolahan, threatening to end his life if he didn’ t grant permission to continue sêxually assaulting his brother’ s wife.
On one occasion, Hamidu, a suspect from Northern Nigeria, was alleged to have deceived the survivor to a cassava farm, where he purportedly force himself on her repeatedly before letting her go.
Odutola recounted that, ” the survivor is mentally incapacitated. The brother- in- law who reported the case claimed that the suspect threatened to kill him to prevent him from stopping the crimes. The suspect is accused of repeatedly engaging in sëxual acts with the survivor” .
Odutola indicated that the investigation was ongoing subsequent to taking the suspect into custody.
In March 2024, media outlets reported a similar case where a 26- year- old individual, identified as Usman Bube, was taken into custody for allegedly attempting to rape his pregnant neighbor’ s wife at the Ogatalo Fulani Camp in the Imala region of the state.
The accused allegedly infiltrated his neighbor’ s residence, where he discovered the expectant mother asleep, and attempted to perpetrate the crime, aware that her husband, Muhammed Awwalu, had departed the community, leaving his wife alone in the apartment.
When the suspect’ s multiple attempts to force the helpless woman into unlawful sêxual activity were unsuccessful, he allegedly resorted to threatening her with a knife in an attempt to intimidate and subdue her. Luckily, his efforts were thwarted when nearby residents intervened and apprehended him before he could carry out his intentions.
