John- Wesley Yohanna, the former Bishop of the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN), recently spoke about his resignation from the church, his strong opposition to LGBTQ rights, and the Nigeria Immigration Service’ s repatriation of a Zimbabwean Bishop.
He was questioned; Why did you leave from your position as Bishop of the United Methodist Church of Nigeria?
He said; ” I am thankful for the 12 years. I had the privilege of serving as Bishop of the UMCN. My Christian experience began with teachings that never addressed homosexuality.
” Annual catechism sessions and Bible readings, such as Genesis Chapter 2, made it plain that God created man and woman to be together, and marriage was defined as the union of a man and a woman.
” This view was reinforced in the Methodist Church, which remained steadfast in its opposition to homosexuality until recent developments.
” When the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) missions amalgamated with the Methodist Church in 1968, and Nigeria later joined the United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1984/85, debates over homosexuality began to develop. However, the Nigerian church has continuously voted against its approval at General Conferences.
He continued; ” We had agreed that if the United Methodist Church ever legalized homosexuality, we would no longer attend a church that condoned it. Unfortunately, the United Methodist Church agreed to recognize LGBTQ people at its General Conference in May 2024.
He explained; ” Furthermore, Nigerian laws prohibit homosexuality, and as members of the Nigerian church, we believe that adherence to these laws is essential.
” Continued membership in the UMC would be a violation of our country’ s Constitution, rendering us legally accountable. As a result, aligning with the GMC, which is consistent with our theological position, was the appropriate course of action.
” On June 1, 2024, I informed the Taraba State administration and other relevant agencies about the UMC General Conference’ s decision.
” On July 29, 2024, I submitted my resignation letter to the United Methodist Council of Bishops, citing the church’ s legalization of LGBTQ as the basis for my departure. They praised my service and accepted my resignation with gratitude” , he concluded.
