Omoyele Sowore, a prominent human rights activist and the driving force behind the #RevolutionNow Movement, has made it clear that the planned nationwide protest in October 2024 will be relentless until the Nigerian government fully addresses the demands of its citizens. The forthcoming phase of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, set to begin on October 1, is designed to confront the chronic issues of poor governance in Nigeria. During the discussion, Sowore remarked, ” The government has violated the law by seeking illegitimate orders. In our circles, we have resolved that when the government misuses the law unjustly, the people must resist. The law should not be allowed to be a tool of oppression.
Citizens have a responsibility not to let these laws bind them unjustly. ” He went on to reference the initial days of the #EndBadGovernance protests, noting how participants were not confined to government- designated areas, even as officials conspired with certain judges to issue questionable orders.
Reflecting on past protests, Sowore asserted that they were successful across all stages— before, during, and after the events. However, he expressed a desire not to dwell too much on past achievements, instead focusing on the upcoming protests. He made it clear that the protests scheduled for October 1 are not bound by a predetermined timeline, stating, ” We will not stop until we achieve our goals. ”
In preparation for the ‘ October Revolt’ protest, Sowore previously released a list of 17 critical demands from the Nigerian populace. These demands were shaped by feedback from Nigerians actively participating in the #EndBadGovernance campaign, indicating a broad base of support and a deep connection to the grievances being voiced.
The demands issued to President Bola Tinubu’ s administration are non- negotiable, with the first being the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals detained for their involvement in the initial #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1- 10. Furthermore, the protesters are calling for the unfreezing of assets and bank accounts belonging to protest participants, along with fair compensation for the emotional and financial suffering they endured during these peaceful demonstrations.
