The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded the arrest of former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, due to concerns over his alleged activities and possession of military- grade weapons.
HURIWA believes that Asari’ s actions warrant prosecution by the authorities or, at the very least, a thorough investigation to determine the legality of his operations.
HURIWA’ s concerns stem from an interview Asari Dokubo gave following his visit to President Bola Tinubu after the latter’ s victory in the 2023 presidential election. During the interview, Asari claimed to have led a private army, conducting operations against terrorists in the North and carrying out assignments in the South- East on behalf of the Federal Government.
This admission alarmed HURIWA, which questioned how a private individual could be allowed to operate a private army, an action that is unconstitutional in Nigeria. The rights group highlighted the severity of Asari’ s claims, particularly in light of a video showing him brandishing sophisticated military weapons that no civilian in Nigeria is legally allowed to possess.
In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA expressed its disappointment that, despite these serious allegations, there has been no action taken by the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), or any other security agency.
The group raised concerns that while the authorities have paraded individuals arrested as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), there has been no transparency about how many have been prosecuted, tried, or convicted.
HURIWA further questioned whether there is any concrete evidence linking the mainstream IPOB, loyal to its leader Nnamdi Kanu, to the violence in the South- East. The association argued that Kanu’ s continued detention is unlawful, as the government has not provided proof of his involvement in the unrest.
Drawing a comparison, HURIWA noted the case of a Miyetti Allah leader who was arrested but later released by the government, despite facing charges in court. The group suggested that this selective application of justice raises significant concerns.
HURIWA has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the killings in the South- East to uncover the true identities of those responsible. The group believes that only an international body like the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) can conduct an impartial investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable.

In addition, HURIWA has demanded the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, as they believe his detention is unjustified. The association’ s statement emphasizes the need for justice and fairness, urging the Nigerian government to ensure that all individuals are treated equally under the law.
