The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has strongly refuted claims that the woman behind a viral video advocating for the poisoning of Yoruba and Edo people is of Igbo descent.
The organization, representing the Igbo ethnic group, stressed that the actions and statements of the woman in the video do not reflect the values and character of the Igbo people. Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, issued a statement on Wednesday in Enugu, condemning the video.
He clarified that there is no substantial evidence to confirm that the woman, who posted the video under the name ” @Anyi_anambra” on TikTok, is Igbo. Furthermore, he emphasized that her message of hatred and violence is entirely inconsistent with Igbo traditions of thoughtfulness, discretion, and self- restraint.
Ogbonnia explained that the attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide was drawn to the video, which has been widely circulated on social media. In the video, the woman allegedly urged the Igbo people to poison the food of Yoruba and Benin individuals. She reportedly claimed that she would encourage other Igbos to engage in such acts of wickedness, inciting them to start poisoning Yoruba and Edo people.
” Ohanaeze would have ignored the social media video clip as coming from a deranged psychopath or one of the fictitious narratives which, with the Internet device, was twisted, dressed, coated, and delivered to the unsuspecting and obliging public, ” Ogbonnia stated.
However, he noted that the group felt compelled to respond due to the concerns raised by numerous prominent individuals who feared that some people might take the threats in the video seriously.
The National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Jare Ajayi, was among those who contacted Ohanaeze regarding the video. He forwarded the clip to the organization and requested prompt action, prompting Ohanaeze to address the issue publicly.
Ogbonnia pointed out that no true Igbo person would consider such a heinous act, especially given the Igbo people’ s deep- rooted cultural values. He highlighted that the Igbo are known for their widespread presence across Africa and their tendency to create homes and integrate into local communities wherever they go.
This deep connection to various communities makes the idea of harming others, particularly in a public setting like a market, unthinkable for any Igbo person.
” Based on the foregoing, two major derivatives emerge: if one should poison food in Lagos or Ibadan or Benin, is there any guarantee that the first victim will not be Igbo? ” Ogbonnia questioned, underscoring the absurdity of the woman’ s proposition.
In his statement, Ogbonnia described the woman in the video as a ” depressed drowning ethnic bigot, obsessed by the negative side of history and unflinchingly satanic in orchestration. ” He suggested that the woman might be suffering from deep- seated ethnic animosity and is intent on spreading division and mistrust.
Additionally, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, the Secretary- General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, also condemned the video. He expressed strong disapproval of both the content and the creator, labeling her as a mischief- maker and a merchant of discord. Emuchay emphasized that such rhetoric is designed to incite ethnic conflicts where none exist.
” Ohanaeze seizes this opportunity to enlighten the younger generations that the Igbo, Edo, and Yoruba share a lot in common. We share in cultural affinity, cosmology, morphology, and hospitality, ” Ogbonnia added. He highlighted the long- standing inter- marriages between the Igbo, Yoruba, and Edo, which have resulted in strong familial bonds and a shared heritage.
