The agreement was reached under the aegis of the Shipping Agencies, Clearing, and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) and represents a landmark achievement in improving workers’ conditions in the shipping sector.
The new wage applies to various employees within the association and is seen as a historic advancement for the industry.
It was gathered that President Bola Tinubu’ s administration, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), played a pivotal role in brokering the deal, which has set a new standard in the nation’ s labor market.
During the document signing ceremony held in Lagos on Friday, August 23, 2024, Mrs. Boma Alabi (SAN), the president of SACFEA, emphasized the significance of the agreement.
” The most significant thing is that in setting a minimum standard for the shipping industry, we have gone above and beyond any other industry in Nigeria, ” she stated.
Alabi highlighted that the national minimum wage, currently set at N70, 000, was the result of prolonged negotiations and considerable effort by the federal government.
She elaborated, ” The national minimum wage is N70, 000 and we know what it took to get the federal government to get to that point. ”
