A fresh revelation has surfaced, challenging the earlier claims made by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq regarding a supposed vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu during the inaugural National Council of State (NCS) meeting last week.
Governor AbdulRazaq, who also serves as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), had publicly stated that both the Council of State and the NGF unanimously passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu.
He claimed, ” The high note of the (Council) meeting was a unanimous passage of a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces. ”
However, this claim has been strongly refuted by a high- ranking official who attended the meeting. The official, who chose to remain anonymous, described AbdulRazaq’ s statement as false, referring to it as ” a dummy sold to reporters. ”
The official pointed out that the National Council of State is a serious advisory body made up of former Presidents, Heads of State, top officials from the judiciary and legislature, and key government figures. Such a body, the official argued, does not engage in actions typical of town hall meetings, such as passing votes of confidence.
” The Council of State meeting is highly structured, with a formal agenda guiding its proceedings, ” the official explained. ” There was no item on the agenda calling for a debate or decision regarding a vote of confidence in the President. Moreover, votes of confidence are more common in Parliamentary systems, whereas Nigeria operates under a Presidential system of government. ”
The official disclosed that after the Council meeting concluded, Attorney- General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, made a suggestion. In response to ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, Fagbemi proposed that the Council should show solidarity with President Tinubu.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, immediately rose to second the proposal, suggesting the Council pass a vote of confidence in the President.
However, according to the source, the motion did not receive any discussion or support from other high- ranking members present, including former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, who were physically in attendance. ” No former Presidents or Heads of State, nor the governors at the meeting, spoke on the motion, ” the official revealed.
The source added that the former leaders likely felt embarrassed by Governor AbdulRazaq’ s exaggerated claim to the media. ” To be fair, the proposal was made, but it was not something the entire Council formally agreed upon, ” the source emphasized.
