The Federal Ministry of Education has publicly distanced itself from any involvement in a controversial debate on same- sex marriage proposed by the Creative Africa Initiative.
The topic of the debate, ” Same- Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized in Nigeria, ” has sparked widespread criticism across the country, reflecting deep- seated concerns over the issue’ s cultural and legal implications.
In response to the mounting controversy, the Ministry issued a strong statement accusing the event organizers of forging its letterhead to give the impression of official support for the debate.
Folasade Boriowo, the Ministry’ s Director of Press and Public Relations, made it clear that the Ministry had no part in the proposed event and condemned the use of its name in connection with the debate. Boriowo emphasized that the topic of same- sex marriage is highly sensitive in Nigeria, a country where cultural and religious values are strongly opposed to such unions.
She noted that the debate could disrupt public peace and societal norms, potentially leading to unnecessary tension and division within the community. ” The proposed debate topic is highly sensitive and contrary to the cultural and religious values upheld by the majority of Nigerians, as well as to extant Nigerian laws, ” Boriowo said in the statement.
The Ministry further revealed that the forged letter in question contained several discrepancies, including an outdated reference number linked to the defunct Basic and Secondary Education Department, which ceased operations on June 17, 2021.
Additionally, the letterhead used in the forgery displayed an outdated design, and the text appeared to have been superimposed on old letterhead paper. These inconsistencies, according to the Ministry, clearly indicated that the document was not authentic.
Moreover, the Ministry pointed out that the 2024 debate program under the Senior Secondary Education Department has not been finalized and bears no relation to the content or scheduling mentioned in the forged letter, which inaccurately suggested an event date in April 2025.
In conclusion, the Federal Ministry of Education categorically denied any connection with the Creative Africa Initiative or the debate it proposed. The Ministry urged the public to disregard the fake communication and await official announcements regarding future educational programs and initiatives.
