On Friday night, a 48- year- old Point of Sale (POS) operator, identified as Fatai Kehinde, was brutally killed under the Kuto bridge in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. Known locally as ” Faithy, ” Kehinde was the son of the Baale (traditional leader) of the Kuto community. His death marks a troubling escalation in violence within the area, particularly following the recent murder of a barber just days earlier.
Details Of The Incident
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragic event unfolded around 11 PM when Kehinde was preparing to close his POS shop located in the Kuto market. Reports indicate that his assailants approached under the guise of customers. One individual pretended to request a cash withdrawal, while three masked accomplices emerged and opened fire. Fortunately, the shot was said not to have penetrated and so he tried to escape by taking to his heels,
However, his escape was short- lived. The attackers pursued him to the Kuto under bridge, where they ultimately caught up with him and fatally assaulted him. This heinous act has left the local community in shock and mourning.
Possible Connection To Recent Violence
Community sources suggest that the same gang may be responsible for both this murder and the earlier killing of a barber in the Isale- Oja Kuto area, which occurred approximately four days prior. Witnesses noted that the assailants used a similar vehicle in both incidents, raising concerns about a pattern of targeted violence in the region.
Official Response
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that the police are actively investigating both murders. He emphasized that the command is committed to apprehending those responsible for these violent acts and restoring safety to the community.
Community Reaction
The murder of Kehinde has sparked outrage and fear among residents of Kuto, who are calling for increased security measures to protect their neighborhood. Many are demanding justice for Kehinde and his family, expressing their hope that the authorities will swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
Kehinde was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon, with the community coming together to mourn the loss of a beloved figure. His tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the pressing issue of violence in the region and the urgent need for effective law enforcement to ensure the safety of all citizens.
As the investigation unfolds, the Kuto community remains vigilant, hoping for a swift resolution to these violent incidents and a return to peace in their lives.
