A dismissed soldier and his accomplice have been implicated in the murder of James Luka, a tricycle rider from Polo in Maiduguri.
The victim was reportedly hired by the two men on Monday but was subsequently killed and buried in a shallow grave in Kasuwan Fara, Borno State’s capital.
The victim’s brother, who spoke anonymously, revealed that Luka was last seen on Monday carrying the suspects in his tricycle to Kasuwan Fara.
After Luka failed to return, his family reported him missing to the police and checked hospitals, but had no leads until today.
The case was brought to light when a concerned citizen noticed the suspects washing Luka’s tricycle, which was stained with blood.
The suspects were detained, and during questioning, they admitted to the murder and the burial of Luka in a shallow grave.
The police, assisted by BOSEPA officials, exhumed Luka’s body from the grave in Kasuwan Fara, and he was later reburied at GRA Christian Cemetery.
In a separate development, the Borno State Police Command announced on Saturday the arrest of 96 suspects linked to violence, theft, and other crimes during the recent nationwide hunger protests.
These arrests took place between August 1 and August 10.
Commissioner of Police Yusufu Lawal, speaking through Police Public Relations Officer ASP Kenneth Daso, detailed that proactive measures by the police and collaboration with other security agencies helped prevent further unrest.
Lawal noted that seven social media influencers were arrested before the protests for inciting violence and making derogatory remarks about officials.
During the protests, seven suspects were caught hoisting foreign flags, an act seen as undermining national security.
Additionally, 83 suspects were apprehended for vandalizing property, burning tires, rioting, and looting in various areas including Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).
Significant damage was reported, including the vandalism of the WFP warehouse and other public infrastructure. Lawal reiterated the police’s commitment to maintaining public order and urged the community to report any suspicious activities.
