Tinubu In TROUBLE! #EndBadGovt Protest Organizers Shock FG, Move To Sue Tinubu Over Killing, Arrest Of Protesters
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent human rights activist and the Convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, has declared that the organizers of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests will pursue legal action against the Nigerian government under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
This decision follows a series of violent incidents, including attacks, killings, arrests, and detentions of peaceful protesters by police and other security agencies during a 10- day nationwide demonstration. The protests were aimed at addressing issues of hunger, hardship, and bad governance under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a recent interview with Saturday PUNCH, Sowore, who is also a former presidential candidate of the Africa Action Congress (AAC), strongly urged the Tinubu- led government to respond to the protesters’ demands.
He expressed deep concern over the government’ s handling of the protests and criticized the excessive use of force against unarmed citizens who were merely exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
One of the most alarming aspects of the protests has been the number of casualties. When questioned about the number of protesters killed and arrested during the demonstration, Sowore revealed that the organizers have confirmed that 17 people were fatally shot by the Nigeria Police Force.
This figure starkly contrasts with the claims made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, who, during a joint security press briefing, denied any records of police officers killing protesters.
Sowore’ s statement directly challenges the IGP’ s assertion, highlighting a significant discrepancy in the reported casualty figures. Egbetokun had further claimed that the Nigeria Police Force did not deploy officers armed with rifles and live ammunition, nor did they use excessive force against protesters. According to the IGP, the only measure taken was the use of tear gas to disperse the crowds.
However, Sowore refuted these claims, stating, ” So far, we know of 17 persons murdered in cold blood by the Nigeria Police Force. We know of a police officer who was killed by a fellow policeman who rammed a water cannon armoured carrier into his van in Katsina State and an immigration officer who shot himself accidentally in Borno State. ”
Sowore emphasized that these casualties were not just numbers but human lives that were unjustly lost due to the actions of the state. He expressed his deep sorrow for those who had ” put themselves in the line of fire for the country” and were killed, maimed, or injured for simply exercising their right to protest peacefully.
He accused the government of being the first to introduce violence into the protests. ” The government was the first to bring violence to the protest, ” Sowore stated. ” They were the first to use steam water cannons on peaceful protesters in Kano State. The first to fire bullets at protesters armed with nothing but placards. ”
Sowore further vowed to seek legal redress for the government’ s actions on behalf of those who were unjustly attacked and detained. He declared, ” We will never forget those who have been wronged. One day, everyone who has committed these egregious crimes against the Nigerian people will be made to face the consequences of their actions. ”
Sowore also criticized President Tinubu’ s recent address to the nation, describing it as lacking in concrete actions to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian people. He labeled the President’ s government as ” pathetic, self- centred, and not people- focused, ” arguing that the administration has failed to address the urgent needs of the citizens.
” The Nigerian people are more impoverished, hungrier, and more despondent about their economic conditions than at any time in our history, ” Sowore stated. He emphasized that the government’ s next steps must involve taking tangible actions to improve the lives of its citizens.
” They should start doing the right thing that will make life more abundant for the Nigerian people, ” Sowore urged. He called for the government to address corruption, create economic opportunities, provide a living wage for workers, and engage in mass employment of young people. He also stressed the need to resolve the ongoing energy crisis, engage in massive public works, and reduce the cost of governance.
