The Nigerian Army has reacted to the allegation that some of its personnel joined the hoodlums to loots foodstuffs in the city of Kano during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
It could be recalled that some military personnel were seeing with gallons of oil in a video which has gone viral. The soldiers loaded their vehicle with the gallons and were moving to an unknown location, and they refused to stop even when one of the protesters hijacked a gallon of oil from the moving military vehicle.
The situation has generated reactions from Nigerians as many people accused the soldiers of also going on looting spree as they also battle to survive the economy hardship and hunger crisis.
However, while reacting to the accusation, the military authority in a statement released by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, claimed that the soldiers were responding to a distress call at the government house, stating that the gallons of oil in their vehicle belong to Barakat Stores.
According to him, the soldiers had earlier stopped the looting of the store by hoodlums and successfully recovered the oil. He added that after the recovering, they were notified about a planned attack on the government house, explaining that they were recorded while attending to the distress call and that was why they were not bothered by the hoodlum who hijacked a gallon of oil from their moving vehicle.
” The troops intercepted some of the hoodlums and recovered some of the looted items, which they were conveying back to the Store, when another distress call of a planned attack on the Kano State Government House was received, ” he said.
” Considering the urgency of the imminent attack, the troops immediately diverted to respond to the distress call in order to protect the Government House from the hoodlums’ attack. It was in the course of the response to a distress call about a possible attack on Kano Government House, that the video was shot, ” he added.
He further stated that the recovered looted goods were returned to the Barakat Stores and the store management commended the Army for coming to their rescue.
