The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has issued a statement denying any involvement in the recent protests in northern Nigeria. These protests are part of the #EndBadGovernance movement, where some demonstrators were seen carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of President Putin.
Others held placards with various messages, raising concerns about potential external interference in Nigeria’ s domestic affairs. On Monday, the Russian Embassy clarified that the actions of the protesters do not reflect any official policy or viewpoint of the Russian government.
The embassy emphasized Russia’ s commitment to non- interference in the internal affairs of other nations, including Nigeria, and reassured the public that it respects the sovereignty of the country.
In their statement, the embassy said: ” The Embassy has noted the reports in Nigerian media and the circulation of videos and images in digital media depicting protesters in northern states of the country carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
” The government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way. As always, we emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria.
” These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals, and they do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in the issue. We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with the Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy. However, should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence we strictly condemn them. ”
Meanwhile, in Kano, one of the individuals behind the spread of the Russian flag has been arrested. Reports indicate that protesters of the #EndBadGovernance movement were waving Russian flags in different parts of the country.
On Monday, August 5, the police cracked down on a tailor in Kano and some youths who were using the flag during the protests. The tailor, identified as Ahmed, was found with Russian flags at the time of his arrest. He has since been taken into custody for interrogation.
This situation has sparked debates about the influence of foreign symbols in local protests. While some view it as a form of expressing global solidarity, others see it as a potential threat to national sovereignty. The Russian Embassy’ s statement aims to quell any concerns of interference and to reaffirm their stance on respecting the internal affairs of Nigeria.
